View of Niagara River at Queenston

The Niagara River drains the waters of the Upper Great Lakes down to Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence. The Niagara Region has been key to water transportation opening up the North American interior to settlement and development, as well as to shipping its resources to markets using both the Welland Canal in Canada and the Erie Canal in the United States.

Nearby

Fort Erie Waterfont

There's lots to do, if you want to get out of town. There are lots of other visit-worthy communities in the Niagara Frontier & Niagara Penninsula. In New York are Tonawanda & Lockport along the Erie Canal, and Youngstown. In Ontario are Niagara on the Lake was Upper Canada's first capital city, and then Fort Erie, Port Colborne on Lake Erie, and Welland, Thorold, and St Catharines along the Welland Canal.

This temperate agricultural area has many wineries and farmers markets.
